whereas in Genesis he says he blessed the seventh day. In so saying, God is showing that his requirements in the Fourth Commandment are not arbitrary, to be followed without question or reason. God does not leave his people blindly to follow his rules. By this identification of the Sabbath with the seventh day of creation, he is investing the ‘rest’ of the seventh day with meaning for man, that man is to enter into, or participate in, his—God’s—rest. It is a Sabbath rest. When in verse 11 we read,
